Hypnosis is considered a great performance art where it is highly important what you do and, at the same time, the way in which you do it. You must never forget that just 7% of what we express comes from words and the rest is purely body language that comes with the speaking process.
As you will move on with your subject, you must center your attention on the “go first” technique and also to squeeze everything you can out of the meaning of words. These two principals come hand in hand with rhythm and emphasis and they are extremely important in a hypnotist’s career.
The emphasis principle refers to the meaning you give to words and the way in which the emphasis is affecting the language. Leaning towards a word, using your voice is emphasis. When you are emphasizing something, you are underlining that thing, bringing it in front. During this process you are adding a dramatic effect to your performance.
In this example: “Have you driven your car to the mall today?” you can say the words without emphasizing either of them. But you can also accentuate the word “you” like this: “Have You driven your car to the mall today?” This means an inquiry about who was the person that drove that car.
And if we put an emphasis on the “today” like this: “Have you driven your car to the mall today?” you are changing the meaning of your question. Emphasis changes completely the meaning of the phrases. When you are doing this, emphasizing words, you are creating “multiple levels of information”, saying something that has two different meaning on two different levels. Changing tonality will make emphasis happen naturally.
In your practice, you will emphasize on purpose. You will be able to show your subject what great importance lies behind the words you are saying. The best example is the difference between two completely different statements that mean the same thing if you look how the phrase is constructed. But when we look at the emphasized word, the subject of the phrase changes completely.
The fourth principale is about the rhythm and also about the tone of voice. When somebody is in trance, the rhythm helps a lot to relax that person and to be open to suggestions. A smooth language is also called a “trance rhythm”.
The trance rhythm enables the same effect as when you are listening to music. It sets you in a state of altered consciousness.
Speaking using rhythm functions is just like the emphasis and has the role of changing the way in which you are perceived by people. Probably some of the most eloquent examples are poetry and music. The film Cyrano de Bergerac is a very good example. The speech manner in this movie is created on poetic couplets.
These couplets help you see the elegance behind the language. The effect is very powerful. Practicing rhythm and also tone as much as you can is highly important if you want to become a skillful hypnotist and they will help you a lot with every subject, through your entire career.
